34 years old Indonesian, Sakti Parantean, became the 2008 International Young Screen Entrepreneur tonight at a packed awards ceremony at London’s Soho Hotel. A visibly shocked Parantean received the award from renowned UK film producer Duncan Kenworthy.
“We’ve been joking that I couldn’t win the award this year, because an Indonesian won it last year” commented Parantean on receiving the award, “I was even helping some of my fellow finalists with their presentations! I want to thank the British Council for this amazing award and I want to say to my fellow finalists, you are all remarkable.”
British Council’s Director Screen, Satwant Gill, read the judges’ citation:
“Sakti gave a deeply thought through and clearly executed explanation of the challenges and opportunities for the screen sector in Indonesia. He is highly impressive in business terms, with an underlying social and moral dimension to his company, using film to do something extra by creating excellent models of infrastructure in his country. The jury were touched and inspired by his vision and believe he is both an entrepreneur and a leader.”
Parantean wins a £7,500 prize fund, which he can use to develop a project between Indonesia and the UK.
Earlier in the evening each of the finalists introduced the audience to a five minute long film extract from their country. A rich medley of dance and drama, horror and documentary was presented.
The winner of the UK Young Screen Entrepreneur 2008 award was also announced at the ceremony, Teun Hilte of London-based Content Republic taking the inaugural award.
